May 23, 2026: Renewing the commitment to end obstetric fistula

Marking the 14th International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, commemorated on May 23, 2026, I (Prof. Justin Paluku) reflect on a memorable milestone in the history of fistula treatment at HEAL Africa Hospital in Goma.

I pay special tribute to Annuarite (pseudonym), the first fistula patient we successfully treated in the new Fistula Treatment Center at HEAL Africa, during its inauguration on January 3, 2019. Her story remains a powerful symbol of hope and renewal for many women.

This year’s global theme, “Health is a human right: Invest to end obstetric fistula and other maternal health injuries,” serves as a strong reminder that, despite the progress made, much remains to be done to ensure that every woman has access to dignified, restorative care.

Since 2003, HEAL Africa Hospital has been providing free fistula repair services. To strengthen patient care, Fistula Foundation fully funded and equipped the new Fistula Treatment Center, where women have access to the comprehensive, holistic care they need.
